DARION SHABBASH
Darion Shabbash (1990) — an artist from Almaty (Kazakhstan), lives and works in Berlin.
Does street graffiti, makes multi-layered colored plastic compositions and kinesthetic installations in public spaces.
Darion started doing street art in 2004, graffiti became a way to overcome boredom and grey nature of a post-Soviet provincial town for her. She made pieces at Snickers-Urbania, but after several unpleasant incidents gave up street art for some time — graffiti culture in Almaty was poorly developed then. For several years she studied in an art college, which she gave up to self-study, that became a habit. In 2012 she returned to street art.
In her works, the artist combines abstract and figurative elements, creating a mixed technique. Grotesque images, which forms split into composite geometric figures, first appeared on the streets and later were realized in adequate sheet plastic. Often Darion integrates plastic elements into her festival works along with spray, and even some smaller gallery canvas pieces. An important place in Darion’s approach is given to the combination of colors, which expressive nature remains from the graffiti period. Today the artist pays more attention not to the work with the environment and interaction with the given context, but to the creation of new and synthesizing new images.
